Description

Giuseppe Gallo, an architect from Turin, designed the Parish Church which was built between 1899 and 1904 as requested by the Parish Priest at that time, Don Antonio Cavatorta. The church, which is dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul, is in the Baroque style, with a single nave and side chapels dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Don Attilio Monge (1928-2014)

Don Attilio Monge (1928-2014) Don Attilio Monge, remembered as a master of communication, was born on the 11th April 1928 in Monasterolo and died on the 26 February 2014 in Rome, where he had passed much of his life. He joined the Paolina congregation in 1942 at the age of 14 and was ordained priest at the Regina degli Apostoli Church in Rome on the 5th December 1954. He celebrated his first mass in Monasterolo on Christmas Eve of the same year together with Don Alessio Barbero, who was also a member of the Paolino congregation from Monasterolo. The founder of the Congregation, Don Giacomo, entrusted the young priest Attilio with the management of the weekly magazine about current affairs and politics Il Giornalino and later Orizzonti. In that period he not only worked as a journalist but also as an Italian literature teacher in the Istituto San Paolo di Alba. He contributed to the magazines “Madre di Dio”, and “Famiglia Cristiana” and published some children’s books, two of which achieved great success and were translated into several languages: The Greatest Story Ever Told (La più grande storia mai raccontata) and Twelve on the Way (I dodici in cammino). Don Attilio, the first ‘Paolino’ to become an accredited journalist worked as assistant teacher in general journalism techniques at the Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali “Pro Deo” (LUISS) in Rome. In 1965 Don Alberione employed him at SanPaoloFilm where he was general manager from 1969 to 1983. During this time they made catechism programmes, biblical films and in 1971 the film production of the famous television series “Pinocchio” directed by Comencini. Don Monge began working in television in 1983 when he was called by the general secretary of the Cei to direct televised masses. The two televised masses broadcast from the Parish Church in Monasterolo on the 24 November 1989 and 23 November 2003 were moments of pride and glory for the local people.
