MONUMENT TO SANTORRE DI SANTAROSA

Descrizione

Between the Old Town Hall and the imposing Arco di trionfo the statue of Santorre di Santa Rosa watches over the square. The town council wanted the statue built and set up a competition in 1865, it was created by Giuseppe Lucchetti Rossi from Ferrara, who made it in his workshop and later brought it to Savigliano. Santorre is shown in his position of Primo Ministro della Guerra (minister for war), a role that he held in 1821, with a copy of the constitution in one hand, laurels and a sword in the other.
The six-metre high statue, to commemorate the patriot from Savigliano, replaced a twelfth century gothic chapel used as the town registry and for other civil functions and which was knocked down to make way for it.
